[Assam] Fw: Petition to the Supreme Court of India to invalidate the December 15 Resolution of the State Legislature

I have not been receiving assamnet posts for a few days, and haven't
had the opportunity to take the steps to rectify the situation.

I have seen HT and DD's comments below and this is an attempt to
address some of the issues they raise.

First question we need to deal with here is on what the issue is:
Whether it is necessary to change the name Assam to Asom.

Both DD and HT agrees there is no need. Under the circumstances one
might think that is good enough reason to offer their support which
we seek and hope to receive.

The Dutch accounts and the map, the Moghol journals etc. are
verifiable, historical proofs of the continuity of the name Assam. No
more, no less.

Why are we attaching them to the appeal?

Simply because of the widespread misinformation and belief in Assam
that the name Assam was an anglicized form of the name Oxom . The
Dutch and the Moghol accounts add proof that the name of the land in
question was Assam , much before the first British set foot in that
territory.

>I haven't figured out why we have to depend on what an unknown
>dutchman said, >when we have the Ahom Buranjis in Assam that should
>be able to tell us what the >region was called before the British
>came.

*** That is an entirely different issue. WHAT if the Buranji's
available do not tell us what we seek to learn? Does it automatically
prove or mean that the Assam name was something the Moghols or the
Dutch or the British made up, or that it is spurious?

*** I am no history buff. But Rajen and others have, more than once
written extensively on the Ahom name Acham. I understand Xonkordev
too wrote about Asam.

Under the circumstances, to withhold support for this effort, which I
understand is nearing 100 if not passed that mark already, in spite
of full agreement with the premise, solely to DENY credibility to the
Dutch account dug up by Saleh, is difficult to comprehend.

We have taken note of HT's complaint in regard to characterization of
the Dutch governor's note to Mirjumla as congratulatory. Since it
does not add value to our mission, we have taken that
characterization, even though quite credible, off.

However, we will continue to use the Dutch map and accounts,
heretofore unknown in Assam, as important corroborating evidence in
support of our stand that Assam was an ancient and indigenous name,
not merely a British or even Dutch misnomer.

I have silently disagreed with Mr. Barthakur on many issues he raised
before. I do agree with him on the subject he is raising here.
I also agree to be a signatory to the petition if the suggested
changes are made. I haven't figured out why we have to depend on what
an unknown dutchman said, when we have the Ahom Buranjis in Assam
that should be able to tell us what the region was called before the
British came.
If the legislators are skeptical that "x" in "Oxom" or "Axom" will
not be pronounced correctly by the non-Assamese and as a result they
cannot sponsor one of those names, let them stay with "Assam" that is
accepted by everyone (other than the Congress MLA's).
