they are demons --like ghosts--nothing like the "Devil" in the Bible --who is nearly as powerful as God. The Hindu versions can be considered as anti-demi-Gods (asur)  at best --who fight demi-Gods (Devas) in Deva-Asur Wars. But far below God - they are deviant demi-Gods :small fry.

  Hi,
      
     Those in the West must be knowing that today (6-6-06) is being touted as the most evil day in history with many pregnant women having delivered babies one or two days in advance so as not to have the baby born on this day. 
     As per the Bible (New Testament : Book of Revelations 13:18) there is a Devil (nearly as powerful as God) and he will produce an evil man (Anti-Christ) who will have the number 666 . After this guy comes then Christ will appear again and rule for a thousand years.

     I was wondering if it has some similarity to Hinduism. Hindus do not believe in the Devil. We believe that there is no 
evil counterpart of God. Evil are the human qualities which can appear within ourselves by our "Taamsik" thought and action (see Geeta) . And when humans become full of evil nature (Adharma) then God takes human birth to deliver us from OUR own evil such as Krishna, Ram etc(Yada Yada Hi Dharmasya Glani ...  : whenever their is reduction in Dharma..).   
      
     So if the evil number 666 could stand for some evil nature or passion --then there could be similarity between the two books . 
      
     6 or Six -- has same root or variant as Sex --such as sexagenarian (60 year olds) or sextet (any group of six).
      
     And certainly sex is a much abused term and quality these days. XXX stands for sex these days and people in the West have been clamouring for websites ending in .XXX
     instead of .com . Further, AIDS has mainly spread due to unprotected sex . So that 666 may stand for XXX.
