Bengal 'Chirag' to light Northeast The company invests Rs 30 to 35 crore in the unit and aims to sell 3000 PC units per month Monday, June 12, 2006 Bhaskar Hazarika

New Delhi: The household PC brand of West Bengal, 'Chirag' is setting up its manufacturing plant in Meghalaya to focus on the untouched Northeast market.

With the Government focusing on PC penetration in the country, State Governments are also taking active initiative in this mission. 'Chirag' PC is being manufactured by a West Bengal-based firm R P Infosystems Private Limited.

Kaustuv Roy, Chairman R P Infosystems said that they are setting up the manufacturing unit at Barapani Special Economic Zone in Meghalaya, which would be operational from the later part of July or early August. Barapani is close to Guwahati, which is called 'the gateway of Northeast'.

“The Meghalaya government approached us with the idea to set up a manufacturing unit in the state, which would focus mainly on the Northeast market. The SEZ would provide tax holidays on income and sales tax in addition to non-imposition of excise duty for a period of 10 years,” Roy said. The government is also offering 40 per cent subsidy on electricity.

He said that the company has come in to an agreement with the Meghalaya Government, which would provide infrastructure and land for setting up the unit. He said that the company would make an investment of Rs 30 to 35 crore in setting the unit.

Speaking about the market prospective in Northeast, Roy said that they had carried out a survey before entering in to the agreement. According to the survey, the company plans to sell 3000 PC units every month. “It could even be much larger, but we will only be able to reveal once we launch our product in the market. We are targeting to launch our product in the market in August,” Roy said.

Roy said that they would also focus on exporting their products to the neighbouring countries, which are close to the border of Northeast. He said that they have planned to export their products to Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and other neighbouring countries from September.

However, the company has not plans to change its popular household name 'Chirag', as it is optimistic about the untouched Northeast market.
