DC Desi Summer: a weekend forum for young South Asians who want to be catalysts for change!
August 4-6 in Washington, DC
Young South Asians with a passion for progressive social issues, will participate in the first ever DC Desi Summer, a three-day overnight forum that will be hosted at George Washington University in Washington, DC from August 4, 2006 through August 6, 2006.
What is DC Desi Summer? DC Desi Summer is a weekend-long leadership and empowerment program that provides a progressive space for youth of South Asian heritage to examine key social justice issues and take action! The goal of the forum is to engage participants in critical reflection, cross-cultural coalition-building, and activism. We believe that a united, educated, and inspired collective of young activists is crucial to creating
social change both locally and globally.
Who is it for? The event is designed for young South Asian Americans, between the ages of 16 and 21, who want to join a network of young leaders, gain mentors, and create positive change.
What will participants do there? Participants will take part in creative activities and issues-based workshops led by community organizers, activists, academics, and advocates that will address such issues as creating inter-religious harmony, ending violence against women and girls, immigrant rights, the criminal justice system in the post 9/11 era, to name a few. Participants will envision a just society and take steps to create it.
Cost: $30, limited scholarships available.
Applications available at www.myspace.com/dcdesi. For guaranteed housing, apply by Wednesday, July 19th.
Please contact dcds at riseup.net with any questions.
