Rajen-da,
What is popular Hinduism? Do you mean going to temples and praying at the altars is popular Hinduism (and is bad)? Or it is performing all those rituals -similar to those perfomred at Vatican by Pope or at Ajmer's Dargah Sharief or at Golden Temple , Amritsar .

Good observation. What is also common to these people none of them were orthodox Hindus but were supporters of the secular path and none of them believed in the so called popular Hinduism.

Subject: [Assam] Blue bloods for UN Chief - UN reform?? Tharoor=MahatmaGandhi=Nehru
Hi,
I checked the bio fo Shashi Tharoor -India's nominee for UN Chief post. Seems like a blue blood (like Rajiv Gandhi or Rahul Gandhi) born in London raised in India and US. Which Indian can afford to have children in UK -even now?
Well, we must not be biased against blue bloods -after all Gautum Buddha was one, Nehru was another as was Ashoka and also somewhat Mahatma Gandhi ---but they all displayed a streak common to all. Later in their lives they lived among the common man -shoulder to shoulder-in slums and amongst poverty and even through violence?
As United Nations Chief - these are the qualities the candidate should have -besides a knack for organizational reform. Does Shashi Tharoor have them? Has he engaged in dramatic organizational reform, has he suffered poverty or developed empathy for the poor and the oppressed by staying for long stints in his life/career among them. His life and career seems to have started in country's capitals or metros (London [birth] to Mumbai and Delhi [education] to Boston [education] to Geneva[work at UN] etc) and ended therein
