[Assam] 21 New FM radio station in the North-East

The Centrehas recently taken initiative to expand the services of radio and television in the North-east. To meet the demands of different States of the area in the prime time of DD, the Centre has come up with studios in the area, 21 FM radio stations and a new satellite channel umbrella. In Gangtok, a 10 kw FM station and in Silchar a 4 kw radio station, will be set up. The remaining 19 FM radio stations will have the capacity of 1 kw. Additionally, in 100 remote areas of the North east, the Central government is thinking of setting up FM radio stations.
The Chief Executive Officer of Prasar Bharati, KS Sharma, said that, in addition to Sikkim, in the different places of the northeast, the cost of installing FM radio stations and to buy the necessary equipment will have the net expenditure of Rs 146 crore. According to the sources, the Central government has already released the money.
To set up a 10 kw FM radio base in Gangtok will cost Rs 4.40 crore. In addition, studios and employeesÂ’ residences will also be constructed. On the otherhand, to build up a 4 kw FM radio station in Silchar will cost Rs 4.35 crore. The other FM radio stations of 1 kw capacity will incur cost of Rs 64 crore.
Among these FM stations, three bases would be set up at Karimganj, Goalpara and Lumding respectively. In addition in Arunachal-5, in Manipur-2, in Meghalaya-1, in Nagaland-3 and inTripura-2 FM radio stations will be set up. Each centre will have a studio and quarters for the personnel. The Prasar Bharati executive claimed that within 3 years the FM radio centers will come up.
