GUWAHATI, March 21. — The Congress has promised to end insurgency by
focusing on employment generation, education and industrialisation if it
wins the state elections.
Releasing the party's manifesto in the presence of the All-India Congress
Committee leader, Mr Digvijay Singh, and the Pradesh Congress Committee
chief, Mr Bhubaneswar Kalita, the Assam chief minister, Mr Tarun Gogoi,
today announced a three-point campaign based on "the achievements" of the
current cabinet and "exposing" the "ineffectual" Asom Gana Parishad and the
Bharatiya Janata Party.
Mr Gogoi said the party would remain alert against trans-border
infiltration, erecting a fence and updating the national register of
citizens.
He felt, though, that the problem was not as alarming as was claimed by the
AGP and the BJP purely for political reasons.
"Not a single illegal migrant is to be found on Assam's list of voters. Show
me one and I will quit politics," Mr Gogoi said, confident that the Congress
would win at least 80 of the 126
seats.
