  My grandfather (Vaidya Rameshwar Sharma) was born to a poor immigrant (from Rajasthan to Bihar and Bengal) and became rich as an Ayurvedic doctor (Vaidya) - very well known even treated once or twice Gandhi, Nehru -- Dr Rajendra Prasad (India's first President) was a regular visitor to the home he built at Muzafferpur, Bihar - Dr Prasad's hometown. Several Bihar's Chief Ministers and landlords , businessmen etc were his clients -as was Nepal's King.
   
  His eldest son let him down - stole and spent money on women - otherwise he could have popularized Ayurved more. It went down when Allopathic doctors came in. Now research is showing amazing properties of the staple herbs etc used in his medicines -Shilajeet etc. He even used gold and silver in his medicines. But I think due to lack of documentation of the recipes and cures and secrecy - Ayurved suffered. Some mention that long ago Susrut etc even performed surgeries - repairing cut hands or even head.
