Even before this news was published I knew that Harvard President Summers was in India.
My great friend sine school days Puneet Pancholy attended his conference at Mumbai - posted at Reserve Bank of India at Mumbai (he topped RBI's recruitment exam for higher level managers -competing with IIT and IIM grads - having been educated solely in Rajasthan - BEngg, MBA -all from Rajasthan Univ. , Jaipur - after middle school in rural Rajasthan). He too has been wishing to a Phd in Economics from Harvard.
And Harvard pres. came calling on him!! World is really flat. I recall the days he would be thrilled and awed when an infrequent IIT professor would speak at a seminar at Malviya National Inst. of Tech , Jaipur where he was studying.
Incidently I too had cleared the entrance exam for that autonomous college -after preparing jointly with him to join there - besides one for Marine Engg exam conducted thru IIT-JEE nowadays. Incidently if I had joined that marine engg program I might have been earning in six figures in US Dollar terms by now. (one of school mates Shailendra Jang Bahadur Rana - hailing from Nepal Royal connections) - was earning $20-30,000 USD ten years ago - working in ships around the world . Might be a merchant ship captain now.
It seems Summers was choosing his words very carefully though - even giving an impression that he speaks hesitantly.
