It is really nice to see that the Assamese people living in Great Britain are united. They organise Bihu, observe Tithi of Srimanta SankarDeva , Silpi Divas Rabha Divas, and have been trying for development of Assamese Culture Abroad.
I was a PhD student then (1995-1999) at King's College, together with Dr Khanin Pathak of Imperial College, we and our families tried to mix up with the Assamese families living in UK and our interaction even could lead to the formation of a Branch of the Asom Sahitya Sabha in UK in 1998 for the first time on a day where the Assamese Community in UK observed the 550th Birth Anniversary of SankarDev in a big way. Dr Nagen Saikia then President of Asom Sahitya Sabha graced the occassion as the Chief Guest and noted Anthropologist, the author of The Assamese, Dr Audie cantley was the Guest of Honor with the Mayor, Borough of Brent, London as the Special Guest. I still feel myself lucky to be a part of that big celebration.
We also took part in the Millenium Bihu celebration organised at Bradford by the Asom Sahitya Sabha Branch in 2000 where Dr Bhupen hazarika together with a number of noted singer and performing artistes from Assam performed live at BRADFORD. It was a great show to the out side world. It was amazing to see that Dr Karuna Sagar Das, a Sr Doctor working at Bradford did so much for all these to happen.
Luitor pora Tamesoloii a colorful bilingual magazine was also launched with the maximum effort of Dr Karuna Das in 1999 where noted actor, director, and producer of Assamese film Brojen Bora, noted actor Dinesh Das we worked together myself being the Chief Editor in 1999 and 2000.
Recently, the heart throab of young assamese, noted Bolywood singer Zubin Garg was also invited to UK and presented to the world Community with the help of Zee TV at Wiembley with the effort of Ms Rini Kakoti.
Yes, it is great to see Assamese Community in UK keeping the spirit alive.
