Maru - in Japanese =Island. All Japanese Ships have a name ending with Maru. Why So?
Chartered by Hongkong's retired Sikh policemen to Go-East to West and settle - just as Cantonese were. Sikhs were brought in as Trusted policemen by Brit Col onists to keep Cantonese in check - after 2 Opium Wars and Sikhs' not joining 1857 Sepoy Mutiny in India. But later Sikhs fellinto disfavour. Gurkhas were brought in hordes to Assam(1826+), and to Hongkong to take over from Sikhs. Sikhs became disgruntled. Now Hongkong Chinese are pressurizing the last Gurkhas to be out!

1907 Sikhs were denied the right to vote when the government of B.C. passed a bill to disfranchise all natives of India not born of Anglo-Saxon parents.
Foundation stone of the Gurdwara for Khalsa Diwan Society was laid at 1866 West Second Avenue, Vancouver.
A contingent of 901 Sikhs arrived on the Canadian Pacific steamer Monteagle in Vancouver on September 12.
Race riots were held in Vancouver in which the Orientals and the Sikhs were targeted.

It is ironic that within 100 years of British Columbia
(B.C.) state in Canada (where Vancouver is based)banning Sikhs/Indians/Asians of not voting - there was a guy of Indian origin became its Prime Minister/Chief Minister/Governor - the one before the current one -as my host told me.

Today I again went to the Sikh temple/Gurudwara -food
was good, surprisingly toilets were also equipped with
Indian style water taps and mugs (perhaps for retired
parents of recent immigrants from India). Khalsa Diwan
Society which was set up in 1906 -100 years ago and
had constructed this temple is celebrating its 100
years. I did meet a retired mona Sikh (without beard
or turban) (Mr Ravinder Johal) the other day, whose
grand father had come to Canada in 1906 - 100 years
ago!!

Today I
saw a snow white mountain peak from the temple
precincts.

It seems like Spirit of St Louis ship (full of German
Jews) which was returned by USA 1930s --there was an
Indian ship called Koma...Maru (Guru Nanak Ship) which
was sent back by Canadians in 1914 -whose memory
plaque was at the temple.

After coming outside a guy with Einsteinian hairstyle
asked me a question at the bus stop --that in the next
post.

Any comments?
