[Assam] Assam- Asom and Oxom

Whoever said that there are more important things to do then a Asom/Oxom
debate is very much right. But were they very free when they decided to
suggest such a bold step. Was Assam without any burning issues at that
time?

You will find very little support from the netters because this is a
touchy issue. It will bring in a rift between the Ahom and the non Ahom's.
Nobody wants to tread on this issue.

I am not speaking anti Ahom. But want to point out that Assam is a very
complex culture. In the quest for identity we will be alienating ourselves
in our own assamese community. Assam is a conglomerate culture. There were
only a few Upper Burmese who came to what is called Assam now and there
were Tai immigrants who came as peasants. The Ahom last names we have now
are conferred titles given by the Deodhais at that time. This was
irrespective of community background or religion. Doesn't mean that the
others who do not have non Ahom titles now are not assamese or would like
Assam State to be called a Ahom state.
