Guwahati, Oct 16 (IANS) The outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA)
Monday said New Delhi was using the media in misleading the people of Assam.



"Each nation has a collective wisdom. The colonial administration is using
the media and journalists in misleading the people," the ULFA said in its
mouthpiece "Swadhinata" (Freedom).

"It is the moral duty of the media to report events objectively. But it is
totally immoral if it spreads lies and divides a society."

The ULFA said "all official and some private news channels have been under
the control of racists for a long time".

It said some senior journalists in Assam were acting as tools of the Indian
government.

The ULFA, fighting for an independent Assamese homeland since 1979, also
said that denying existence of a progressive modern society was encouraging
religious fundamentalism.

"These fundamentalists are apt in giving sermons for politicking or monetary
gains," the group said, adding Assam stood at a risk of being fragmented.

It reiterated that sovereignty was the right of all people living in Assam.

"This collective right is across languages, religions, class, clan and
tribes as they all live in the same socio-economic civil society."
