ULFA ambushes police patrol
 DIBRUGARH, Oct 20 — ULFA insurgents detonated an improvised explosive device and fired on a police patrol in Asom’s Dibrugarh district today, sparking a fierce firefight. The militants set off the IED at 2.50 pm near Dikhari tea estate when the patrol, led by Moran police station’s Circle Inspector Nityananda Gohain, was returning from an anti-ULFA operation in two vehicles, officials said. 

The police returned fire and a gun battle broke out, they said. 

Upper Assam’s Deputy Inspector General of Police Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta and Dibrugarh’s Superintendent of Police Vijay Ramisetti rushed to the spot with reinforcements. 

One of the police vehicles was damaged in the firing. — PTI
