Subject: [Iepgraduates-list] Job: Rural Education Finance Research in India

 Hi everyone,

For those of you interested in doing field research on education
finance in rural India, consider applying to be a research assistant
with the Centre for Development Finance for the upcoming year!

This summer, I've been working on a education finance research project
with Sendhil Mullainathan (a developmental economics professor at
Harvard) in collaboration with the Centre for Development Finance and
ICICI Bank. My particular project is based in Bhopal, MP, but there
are projects all over -- including Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and
Orissa. We need RAs to continue this research through the year. I've
thoroughly enjoyed my time thus far, and more than anything, the
people with whom I've had the opportunity to work are fantastic. See
below for a more formal job description. Feel free to ask me if you
have any questions!

Best regards,

Anjali Adukia

Centre for Development Finance
Institute for Financial Management and Research, Chennai.

Project Associate for Rural Finance Study

The Institute for Financial Management and Research (IFMR) is an
independent, non-profit, research institute that undertakes applied
research in areas related to finance and development. The Centre for
Development Finance in IFMR was set up to address the challenges in
financing infrastructure and other services in India. This Centre
undertakes applied research and implements projects to primarily
improve the efficiency and targeting of public and private finance and
also identify priority areas for development.

This Centre is currently implementing several projects in rural India
to better understand financing needs, consumer choice and behavior,
ability and willingness to pay for services, the underlying risks and
the impact of providing financial services on agricultural production
and rural livelihoods. These research projects are aimed at
increasing savings rates, mitigating risks, smoothing income and
consumption, and improving the overall well being of the rural poor.
The projects will combine tools from psychology, finance and economics
and will design financial products that serve the rural population.

This study is being undertaken in collaboration with Sendhil
Mullainathan (Professor of Economics, Harvard University), and
researchers from Yale University. This is a unique opportunity to
work on commercially viable and socially relevant development projects
in partnership with distinguished academics and large private
financial institutions.

There are currently multiple vacancies for positions based in Chennai
and the field.

Primary Responsibilities: The Project Associate will work in a team
setting and will be involved in every aspect of the project -- from
design and conceptualization to its implementation. Responsibilities
will include meeting with stakeholders to identify needs, determining
loan structures and contract schemes for farmers, and helping design
the specifics around implementation and evaluation. He/She will
require a mix of analytical, writing and managerial skills to
successfully carry out their tasks. He/She will be involved in
designing questionnaires and the methodology for the study,
randomizing interventions and liaising with survey companies to
implement baseline and post-experimental surveys. He/She will also be
required to assist with other tasks as needed. All responsibilities
will require active interaction with multiple partners in different
stages of the project. Depending on the needs of the project, Project
Associates will also be required to manage the work of interns and
other staff.

Skills and Competencies Required: Successful candidates will have a
Bachelor's or Master's degree in psychology, economics, finance,
business or other related discipline; will be willing to be based in
the field; be fluent in English and one other Indian language --
additional fluency in other Indian languages is preferred; excellent
interpersonal skills and ability to interact with people from a
variety of backgrounds and willingness to learn. Candidates with no
prior experience are also welcome to apply.

Compensation and Benefits: The Centre for Development Finance offers
competitive salaries based on educational and professional experience.

How to Apply: Interested candidates should send CVs with cover letter
to Ms. Vidhya Muthuram (vidhya at ifmr.ac.in).
