- Final-year college student gets a thrashing for ‘loitering’     OUR CORRESPONDENT                 DHSK College   Dibrugarh, Aug. 8: Remember that particularly grumpy teacher in school, the one who seemed to have been born with a cane in his hand? Okay, you forgot those beatings once you stepped into college and a life of freedom, right?
  Hemant Chamaria won’t, not after learning yesterday that corporal punishment can spill over from school to college. A final-year student at Dibrugarh Hanumanbux Surajmal Kanoi (DHSK) College, Hemant suffered the physical pain and the humiliation of being assaulted by a lecturer for indulging in the favourite campus pastime of most collegians: “loitering”.
  A classroom full of students watched in shock as their teacher Ramakanta Gogoi abruptly ended his lecture, walked out of the door and heaped a mouthful of abuse on Hemant and his friends, who were allegedly making a lot of noise while pacing up and down the corridor. 
  Gogoi then dragged Hemant inside the classroom and thrashed him. The youth’s father, Prakash Chamaria, a businessman based in Paltanbazar, filed an FIR with police late last night. Hemant was medically examined today. 
  “Based on the complaint filed by Prakash Chamaria, we registered a case under Section 325 of the IPC against the lecturer,” the officer-in-charge of Dibrugarh Sadar police station, Sisir Baruah, said.
  Gogoi was unavailable for comment, but principal Raghu Borbora apologised on his behalf in the face of a protest by students when the college opened this morning. 
  Prakash confirmed receiving a written apology from the principal. “The letter was delivered to me in a sealed envelope,” he said. The Chamarias are planning to withdraw the complaint against Gogoi in deference to the principal’s apology and assurance that such an incident would not recur.
  One of the students who witnessed the fracas said the lecturer lost his cool because Hemant and his friends were laughing aloud in the corridor. Gogoi used his sandals to beat Hemant despite the student begging for mercy.
