 Lungi-clad MLAs

Assam Tribune Editorial 11th Aug 07— Last Tuesday the Assam Assembly witnessed a comical and unprecedented spectacle of AUDF MLAs attending the august House wearing Lungis andTopis and carrying placards in their hands much to the amusement of the ruling party. On a point of order, raised by a member, the Speaker instead of admonishing the AUDF members for their sartorial preference spoke at length about the dos and don’ts to be observed by the members while attending the House.Lungi is worn mostly in Bangladesh, but their legislators do not attend their legislative bodies wearing Lungis nor it is worn while praying in Masjid. In the South, people wear Dhotis in Lungi style and attend formal functions wearing the same. Our Finance Minister P.Chidambaram very often wears Dhoti in Lungi style while attending Parliament. Members of legislative bodies adopt various tactics to exhibit their protests. In some cases it ends up in fisticuffs between members as recently
happened in Andhra Pradesh Assembly. Some time back, Trinamool Congress MLAs ransacked the WB Assembly premises destroying valuable property like ordinary rowdies. Even ordinary citizens adopt ingenious method to voice their protest. The Gujjars blocked the national highway for days together with the dead bodies of their fellow protectors killed in police action. Young men shaved their heads to express solidarity in the nation wide demand for reservation of OBC quota. But the most daring and novel way of protest was exhibited by the valiant and fiery ladies of Manipur who bared themselves to protest against rape of women by security forces. The members of the legislative Assemblies are in a different footing. All eyes are focused on them and their every action or word is analysed by responsible citizens. They are expected to behave in a dignified way and not to lower the sacred institution by their deeds and words.Unfortunately, over the years the prestige and
honour of the legislative institutions have gone down considerably due to actions of some of the members. The AUDF members’ gimmick may fool Lungiclad illegal immigrants for sometime, but such gimmick cannot fool all the people for all the time and if encouraged may embolden some members to attend the Assembly in their birthday suits as their birth right. Therefore the behaviour of the AUDF MLAs deserves severe condemnation.
