Govt to open 1,600 new ITIs, 8 IITs and 7 IIMs
NEW DELHI: The government, which has been pushing the industry to pursue affirmative action, on Wednesday said it will launch a vocational education mission with private sector help to impart job skills to one crore students every year.
To support the grand plans for industrialisation that his government has, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday said 1,600 new industrial training institutes, 10,000 vocational schools and 50,000 skill development centres would be set up under the mission to supply trained workforce.
The "Vocational Education and Skill Development Mission" will be launched soon with help of the private sector to train over one crore students - up four-fold from today's level, he said, addressing the nation on its 61st Independence Day.
"We will see active help from the private sector in this drive so that they not only assist in training but also lend a hand in providing employment opportunities," he said.
The government will set up 6,000 new quality schools, eight Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), seven Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), five Indian Institutes of Science, Education and Research and 20 Indian Institutes of Information Technology across the country.
"I wish to see a revolution in the field of modern education in the next few years," he said.
He said it should be ensured that every Indian is educated and skilled so that the benefits of employment generation reach all.
He said the University System will be the focus of the government's reform and development agenda. "We will set up 30 new central Universities. Every state that does not have a Central University will now have one."
