  Writers urged to heal scarred society through their works

 GUWAHATI, May 20 – Present day Assam has forgotten its glorious past of courage and valour and has become a slave of easy money, which has brought untold miseries upon the society. 

Though there is yet scope to revive the past glory, however in the absence of able leadership, a number of youth have been grasped by apathy towards labour. These observations were made by Dr Karuna Sagar Das, editor of the annual bilingual magazine Luit to Thames, 2007, which was released on Sunday by renowned writer Mamoni Raisom Goswami.

Making further observations on the prevailing situation in the State, Dr Das said that degradation of values could be prevented if the youth inculcated the culture of work. “ At this time when the Government is not in a position to give employment to lakhs of unemployed youth, the only solution is exercise of work culture and encouraging entrepreneurship,” said Das.

It needs mention here that the magazine Luitar Pora Thamesloi, which was an initiative to establish a relationship between the people living on the banks of the river Luit and Thames for exchange of culture has reached its 8th edition this year. 

Echoing Das, Dr Amarjyoti Choudhury, VC, Gauhati University said that it was necessary to build a bridge between the two rivers and two lifestyles so that both can benefit from the relationship.

Referring to the prevailing situation of fear and insecurity in the State, Dr CAhoudhury said the situation could be changed for the better by the writers as they have the ability to build bridges between two scarred hearts. 

On the other hand, Dr Choudhury called upon all sections of the society in the State including the non resident individuals to come forward and help improve the education scenario. Dr Choudhury said that the colleges including Gauhati University was going through a financial crisis, and appealed for aid so that the crisis could be overcome.

Mamoni Raisom Goswami too expressed concern at the present state of affairs in the educational institutions in the State and warned that if things were not improved at the earliest, the State would see large-scale exodus of brilliant students. 

Lauding the efforts of the publishers of the magazine, Goswami said that Luit to Thames has become an institution and expressed the hope that it would bring closer two different races. Goswami further said that peace was the need of the hour, and writers should shoulder the responsibility of bringing the desired change in the society. 

The function was presided over by veteran artiste Dilip Sarma, and was attended by Lakhyahira Das and other eminent dignitaries.
