Guwahati, Aug 27: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today directed the
concerned authorities to provide clean drinking water and take other
necessary steps to prevent the spread of cholera.

The Chief Minister reviewed a high-level meeting here to take stock of the
situation following three reported cases of cholera in Guwahati, official
sources said here.

He stressed the need for clean drinking water in the affected areas, proper
garbage clearance and cleaning among other measures to prevent the spread of
the disease.

The meeting was attended by Health Minister Himanta Biswas Sarmah, Public
Health and Engineering Department Minister Rihon Daimary and senior
officials of the concerned departments.

The cholera strain 'Vibrio cholerae ogawa' was found in stool samples of
three persons following pathology tests on diarrhoea patients of Uzanbazar
area of the city who fell ill after drinking contaminated water.

Sarmah had claimed that three cases of cholera detected here were not
"virulent in nature and could be cured with normal doses of antibiotics".

Three people have died and more than 35 people taken ill following drinking
of contaminated water in the city.
