Burning issues can wait a little longer. Now that you mention it about South India I recall a situation which has vexed me since my first month at Harvard. I was at the SSN office (Social Security Administraion) and met the on;y other Indian student at Harvard's Grad school of education compared to hundreds who come www.gmu.edu for computers. She was a graduate of IIM Ahmedababd. She was a Punjabi by last name but her grandmother lived in Boston.Her grandmother was a Telugu from Andhra Pardesh. Also there was another young girl - her cousin who was a student at Harvard Business School - also having come from India. The Harvard MBA girl was a cousin of my classmate but . called the older woman as her aunt . I was amazed how can my batchmate's cousin call my batchmate's gradma as aunt.
She did mention that MBA girl's father was also her grandma's brother.. Its so confusing!!!

I cannot argue with you about Englishmen's habits since you studied in England before I was even born. But it seems strange that I never saw any Englishman in a movie or in a story (by Jeffery Archer, Charles Dickens, Shakespeare etc) kiss their sisters and mothers on any place besides cheeks or forehead.
I think this topic is going nowhere. Lord Krishna's sister married their cousin Arjun to produce son Abhimanyu. Lord Krishna was also brother (in words) of Arjun's other wife Draupadi. Cousin marriage is more common in Muslims .

I have a question . A 10 yearold student asked a question " What is a cousin once removed?" I checked on wiki is says once first cousin is one's uncle -- and his children are my cousin once removed. I remember checking in high school days after reading the term in a Sherlock Holmes short story - perhaps in the "Speckled Band"
Even an American colleague was not too sure so it seems this is old system (used by older generation only
