Think small, AIM boss tells experts
- Plea to focus on lesser institutes OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT Lou Majaw performs at the NICT 2007 meet in Guwahati on Thursday. Picture by Eastern Projections Guwahati, Aug. 31: Assam Institute of Management (AIM) director Shantikam Hazarika today requested the IT industry to pay attention to lesser institutes and not only the IITs and IIMs during recruitment.
Hazarika was speaking at a panel discussion on Building an Eco-system for Sustaining a Constant Flow of Skilled Workforce on the concluding day of NICT 2007 at the Vishwaratna Hotel here.
An IIM alumnus, Hazarika cited the case of Dipak Jain, the dean of the Kellogs Business School, to drive home his point that it is the individual who matters and not just the institute. Jain did his schooling in Tezpur, studied at Darrang College and then Guwahati University. He then went on to become the dean of Kellogs Business School, which is the highest honour a management teacher can ask for, Hazarika said.He also said that though Indias space research has reached great heights, there are very few from the IITs who are working at the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro).
Holding out hope for the Northeasts youth, he said that in an industry where the attrition rate was very high, many felt that the youth of the region had the right work attitude, meaning they were not job-hoppers..
Speaking at another panel discussion on Innovation: The New Mantra for Growth of SMEs, the founder of Iridium Interactive Systems, Sriram Bharatam, highlighted how small time entrepreneurs were building billion-dollar business with little capital and tonnes of new ideas.
Pradeep Chopra, the co-founder of OMLogic, spoke about the possibilities that the Internet has offered to entrepreneurs and how online marketing has become the new buzzword of business.
