              Crowd gets larger at city book fair

 GUWAHATI, Dec 11 – The North East Book Fair 2007 at Sonaram HS School Field witnessed the assemblance of a large number of readers and writers from different parts of the region today.

A novel, Gauhati University, written by Urmila Doley was released by the former Vice Chancellor of the Gauhati University Dr Debo Prasad Barua on Sunday.

Another book, Majulir Sattra Parichay, authored by Kamal Dutta and published by Grantha Sanskrity of Jorhat was released by Dr Satyendra Narayan Goswami at the book fair. 

The Majuli Awareness Day was also observed in the book fair on Sunday under the presidentship of Dr Debo Prasad Barua. The Sattradhikar of Auniati Sattra of Majuli, Pitamber Devgoswami inaugurated the programme. 

The Sattradhikar, in his inaugural speech, called upon the political leaders as well as the common people to come forward for the preservation and development of Majuli. He also briefly elaborated on how Majuli has been portraying the cultural and traditional characteristics of the Assamese society. 

Later in the evening, a cultural programme, organised by the State Directorate of Culture, was inaugurated by educationist Dr Nabin Chandra Sarma. A vivid cultural presentation was also made by the All Assam Nepali Students’ Union. 

On Tuesday at the book fair, the students of the Assamese department of the Pragjyotish College presented a colourful cultural programme. Three books were also released on the occasion. 

The organizers are hopeful that since the final examination of different schools are about to end, it will ensure maximum footfall in the book fair premises. 

On Wednesday evening , Balmiki Ramayan, published by Vani Prakash will be release in the book fair. 

On the same day, in an exceptional show in the Sonaram School playground, Bhaskarjyoti Das will puzzle the audience by eating tube lights, earthworm, bricks etc. 

A discussion would also be held on the topic ‘Dignity of women in Northeast, problems and aspirations tomorrow in the book fair on December 12. The programme would be conducted by Dr Renu Devi. Dr Geeta Bharali Neog, Dr Lily Rajbongshi, Dr Sukanya Sarma and Dr Jayashree Goswami would take part in the discussion stated a press release issued by All Assam Publishers and Book Sellers Association, the organizers of the book fair.
