Dear Umesh,
You straightway took me like HG Wells- The Time Machine!!! Now I have to write in Axomiya english.
WE used to fly kites in the months of Magh/Fagun.Pashowar loge loge... No special thread for us, so we was using mothers Cherekir pora Ughat lagowa Gamochar mota xuta. On competitions, we used to take out the juices of Ximalu tree and grind broken glass pieces to make MANJA to apply in the thread. These are miles long and the paper we used was Dainik Assam!!! Too heavy, but with Pachowa- all OK. A long tail... with Kahimala aatha!!!! Uh- what a kite flying in the empty fields.Once the thread is cut- we need to run for miles to bring it back. These are the down memory lane.. a life with all mixed up kids.......And one fine day I used to fly with AN-12,AN-32,IL 76,Dakota..... with uniform to look for the kites from the sky!!!
Thanks lot for giving me my lost days-
Bikash da.

Hi,

Saw the movie Kite Runner - about boys who fly and cut kites in Kabul. I was wondering what is the kite flying season in Assam. I was in Kolkata in summer and they had kite flying fest that day. In North India - winter sun is best for kite flying. On Jan 14 there is the Makar Sankranti -and in Gujarat and some parts of Rajasthan there is kite flying fest -where- like Kabul - the kids each other's kites.
Kite flying competitions are good way for harmony. But I guess it is easier to fly kites where there is open area and less trees and hills are the best or tall houses. On seeing the movie I felt that kite flying might have come to India from the 'west' - Kabul perhaps. Even in Jaipur the sport was popularized by the king who flew huge kites from tthe palace and when they were high in the sky the ropes were cut off. The kite makers are usually muslims (some) having origins in Kabul etc.
In my family my younger brother was the kite runner and I never needed to buy any kites. Ofcourse when he grew up my father forbade him to study on rooftop - with one eye on the books and the other on the kites!!
Any info in kite flying in Assam?
