Rs 25 crore released for GU

GUWAHATI, Dec 26: The Asom Government has today released Rs 25.47 crore, in the form of a demand draft, for various developmental projects in Gauhati University (GU) well within its promised deadline of December 31 for the release of the amount. 
According to official sources, the State Government informed the GU Registrar on December 24 that a ceiling of Rs 25.47 crore had already been released by the Government for the university. According to finance rules, the departments get only ceiling, not cash, from the Government. Prior to that, on December 15, the Government had issued a go-ahead letter to the university. According to the finance rules of the State, a go-ahead letter means asking a department or a recipient to go ahead with works as the required funds will pour in. 
It may be mentioned here that the Postgraduate Students’ Union of GU, in a press meet yesterday, expressed its resentment over the “non-release” of the promised funds to the university by the Government even though the ceiling of the promised amount had already been released the day before. This has exposed that the students had no coordination with the university authorities while going for the press conference.
However, a problem may crop up. Now that the demand draft has been issued today, the university, in accordance with the latest Finance Act adopted by the State Government, will be held responsible if it cannot spend the entire amount by March 31 of this fiscal.
