Subject: [asha-dc-core] Social and environment sensitivity in education
Here is an example of victory of folks demanding social sensitivity in
education and employment. Sathyu and Chmapa di of Bhopal victims'
group were keynote speakers at Asha wide conference held at NY in
2003. Asha Seattle also supports the Sambhavana clinic to provide
healthcare to victims of Bhopal who continue to be gravely affected by
the toxic waste at the site.
Separate I will forward summary of current discussion in Asha wide on
importance of environment education.
Thanks,
Sirish

From Shalini Sharma, Coordinator, Students for Bhopal, India:
Dear Friends,
Time to celebrate and rejoice with happiness!!!
I would be back wishing you a very happy New Year but before that I
would like to congratulate you on a year without Dow at IITs. Dow's
attempts at gaining legitimacy into the country get a serious blow now
when it has been shown doors by the IITians in 5 out of the 7 IITs.
And if you are wondering what happened with the rest two. Well, Dow
lost the case even before entering them.
A year without Dow at IITs-
* Dow cancels the pre placement talks at IIT Madras and
IITBombay not knowing how to respond to the student's questions.
* IIT Kaharagpur decides not to invite Dow for recruitments and
any sponsorship.
* IIT Kanpur cancels Dow's sponsorship to a much publicized
International INCCOM 6 Conference and,
* Now IIT Delhi returns Dow's funding to the Eighth
International gls 8 Conference one day before the conference starts.
And this is just the beginning. While IIT Madras students develop a
viewspaper capturing the debate and asserting-'A recommendation to
institute a space for discussion and debate within the campus
community on the environmental and human rights track records of
corporations to be invited for placement. By not evaluating the social
record of companies, and by presenting only one side (Corporate
viewpoint) of the story, students have been denied full information
required to make a rational decision on who they will work for .', IIT
Kharagpur asks 'To Dow or not to Dow' and conducts an online student
poll that affirms the viewpoint of the majority of students saying a
big NO to Dow!!!
Many Congratulations to more than 1100 IIT alumni, students, faculty
members and thousands more supporters who urged the IIT authorities to
blacklist Dow from their campus. Many Congratulations to the 69
students and 22 faculty members at IIT Madras who demanded ethical
recruiters at the campus. Many Congratulations to the 138 IIT Kanpur
alumni and students who demanded that Dow's money be refused. Many
Congratulations to 348 IIT Bombay students and staff members who
called for rejecting all ties with Dow. Many congratulations to the
organizing team Cheminisight IIT Kharagpur and all the students and
faculty at the Institute who proactively responded to the calls made
through the different petitions. Many Congratulations to all the IIT
alumni and supporters of Bhopal survivors who urged the IIT Delhi
authorities to send Dow back. And while I am at it, I would also like
to extend my heartfelt Congratulations to all those who made sure that
petitions reach all their friends, batchmates, teachers and people
they know from IITs. Again many Congratulations to all the friends
from different IITs who were writing blogs, articles, viewspaper,
displaying the petition links in their orkut and facebook profiles,
changing the status in the messenger to inform others of the events in
the IITs and also many many congratulations to those who showed
receptivity to the other side of the story. The story that speaks of
sensitivity towards life than mere lifestyle! Many Congratulations to
all of you who decided to walk the walk of justice and not just talk
the talk.
Even as we make merry on this incredible success let us renew our
resolve to make our campus a Dow free zone.
Once again I congratulate you all and thank you for a splendid job!
Shalini
Congratulations and big hugs from bhopalis !!!
-Sathyu
