‘Meitei script to replace Bengali in next 10 years’

  IMPHAL, Dec 30 – With the steps to introduce indigenous Meitei script or Meitei Mayek in local tongue in the schools, influential Meetei Erol Eyek Loinashillon Apunba Lup, an ogrnisation which spearheads the script movement here has expressed confidence that Meitei Mayek would replace Bengali script within the next ten years.This was expressed by MEELAL leaders in an interaction with mediapersons here on Saturday.

With introduction of indigenous Meetei script for students till class III successfully, the text books for class IV to be taught from the next academic session 2008-09 have already been printed and made ready, Meetei EroEyek Loinashillon Apunba Lup president Ngasepam Yumjao has informed. 

Necessary preparations have been made for launching a mass campaign for teaching the script to the general public with effect from January 2 next year, the leader added.

He said his organisation has been able to accomplish many tasks including introduction of Meitei Mayek till class III and use of Meitei Mayek on the nameplates of vehicles. 

Along with the success of introducing Meetei Mayek to the students till class III since the beginning of the current academic session, the printing of the text books for class IV which are to be prescribed from the next academic session has also been completed, Yumjao said. All these have been accomplished with the support of the people and the permission of the Government, Yumjao said, while expressing gratitude to Chief Minister, Education Minister and other authorities concerned on behalf of MEELAL. 

MEELAL gen secy Moirangthem Naokhamba said they have already started a coaching class at Kebol Girls’ High School since December 16 to ensure no students were left out from learning the script.
