Centre's conditions insulting: ULFA

  July 02, 2007 16:01 IST

The banned ULFA has alleged that the conditions set by the Centre for talks were 'insulting' and that it was not 'begging for talks'.
The outfit in the latest issue of its mouthpiece, Freedom, asserted that it was not begging for talks but 'only wanted an honourable political solution to Assam's problems'.
The Centre had conveyed to talks facilitator Indira (Mamoni) Raisom Goswami that it would hold talks only with ULFA leaders holding top posts in the outfit and not through and intermediaries like the Peoples' Consultative Group.
The ULFA, however, asserted that the PCG was formed to start the talks process with the government but its 'role was not yet over'.
The editorial further pointed out that the ULFA would consider talks with the government only if it comes through the PCG.
The Centre has set three conditions for resuming the peace initiative which include a direct communication from the outfit's chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa or military chief Paresh Barua indicating their willingness for talks with the Centre.
Willingness for the talks without any pre-condition and the dialogue in the presence of emissaries of either side selected by the ULFA or government were the two other conditions.
