Premier wildcat has shows in eastern India
By OGJ editors
HOUSTON, July 18 -- A wildcat being drilled in Assam, India, 55 miles east of Sylhet, Bangladesh, encountered a sandstone at 4,002 m measured depth with good hydrocarbon shows and high formation pressure, said operator Premier Oil PLC, London.
The extent and quality of the sandstone and the nature of the hydrocarbons were unknown at presstime, Premier said.
The company resolved mechanical problems caused by the high pressure without sidetracking Masimpur-3, set 7-in. casing, and resumed drilling toward the main objective, thought to be the Oligocene Renji formation.
The rig is available for two further wells on the Hailakandi and Kanchanpur prospects on the Cachar block, in which Premier holds 14.5% interest. The block lies east of large gas fields in northeastern Bangladesh, and a number of oil discoveries and seeps lie east and west of the block (see map, OGJ, Aug. 8, 1983, p. 149).
