        Even with visas, Bangladeshis do vanishing act

GUWAHATI, July 26: Detected Bangladeshis doing the vanishing act is not new in Asom, but of late it came to light that even Bangladeshis entering Asom on the strength of their passports and visas also do the vanishing act in the State, thereby posing a serious security threat to the State and the country. Even though the State Government put the number of such Bangladeshis who had entered Asom with passports and visas but did not go back from the State even after the expiry of the periods of their stay in the State at 500, the Centre put the number of such Bangladeshis at 5,000.
According to sources, following an instruction from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to the State Government to take the matter seriously, Asom Home Commissioner and Secretary instructed all the deputy commissioners and the superintendents of police of the State to keep a close vigil on the movement of such Bangladeshis and ensure that they go back from Asom within the period mentioned in their visas. According to sources, the MHA is worried over the fact that such Bangladeshis who enter Asom through the legal course, but stay back illegally in the State by giving the immigration and police officials the slip, pose a more serious security threat to the State and country than those who enter the State illegally through the border since the former are more advanced on all fronts than the latter.
It may be mentioned here that there are as many as three entry points— Karimganj, Sutarkandi and Mankachar — for legal entry of Bangladeshis into Asom, and the immigration offices there register the names and addresses of the people who the immigrants are supposed to visit. According to sources, there is every possibility that the immigrants may also give false addresses at the immigration offices so as to give the authorities here the slip. Sources further said the border police has no sufficient manpower to follow such immigrants.
According to sources, the Government has now risen to the occasion and instructed even the officers-in charge of the police stations to keep track of such immigrants in their respective jurisdiction.

GUWAHATI, July 26: With the issue of exodus of suspected Bangladeshis into Asom heating up the situation in the State, the Asom-Miyan (Asomiya) Parishad today said that it would issue identity cards to Muslims who had entered Asom before 1971 so as to avoid the harassment in the name of detection and deportation of Bangladeshis. 
Talking to newsmen in the city today, the parishad president MG Hazarika and general secretary MM Ali said that the parishad had already started a survey in this regard. They said that the issuance of identity cards would be based on authentic data and documents.
Coming down heavily on the Congress-led Government in the State on the controversy regarding the exodus of a large number of suspected Bangladeshis to Asom from Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Mizoram, the parishad leaders said that the State Government should ascertain the nationality of the suspected people within a month and deport the Bangladeshis and rehabilitate the Indians.
Meanwhile, the North-east unit of the Viswa Hindu Parishad (VHP) today appealed to the AUDF and the Jamiat-Ulema-e-Hind leaders to join the oust-Bangladeshi drive in the North-east. 
Talking to newsmen in the city today, North-east VHP president Jyotish Chandra Pathak and spokesperson Nayan Ranjan Baruah said that the oust-Bangladeshi drive being carried out in the region was a good sign to make the region Bangladeshi free, and as such all Indians, regardless of their religious identity, should take part in the drive.
