AAMSU warns Asomiyas of retaliation
Samujjal is a Cong agent
By our Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, July 28: In an indication of sharp polarization in student politics in Asom, the All Assam Minorities Students Union (AAMSU) has today come down heavily on the All Assam Students Union (AASU) on the issue of alleged harassment of the religious minority people in the name of detection of Bangladeshis and termed the latters advisor Samujjal Bhattacharyya as Congress agent.
The minority students body also warned of possible retaliation against the majority community if such harassment on the minorities is continued. If the harassment against the minorities continue, then the people with titles like Sarmah, Deka or Kalita may come under retaliation in the minority-dominated areas, said Ajijul Hussain Khondakar, chief organizing secretary of AAMSU, while talking to the press here this morning.
AAMSU president Abdul Aziz said the AASU advisor has been instigating the North-east students bodies to raise the Bangladeshi issue in their respective States to bring himself into the limelight and fulfil his secret political dream to be the Home Minister of Asom. Bhattacharjee never wants AGP president Brindabon Goswami to be the Chief Minister of Asom and for this reason he had indirectly helped the Congress to come to power for the second time, the AAMSU leader said, pointing out the AASU leaders joint border visit with Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil.
Aziz said the AASU and the North East Students Organization (NESO) have been harassing the minorities in various north-eastern States, taking advantage also of the absence of the IM(DT) Act in Asom. The working class people have been beaten up mercilessly like animals and their documents have been destroyed before being chased away, he said.
The minority students body warned of retaliation against the people of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Mizoram if such situation continued further, and said that the AASU and the NESO would be responsible for any untoward incident in Asom.
The AAMSU claimed that not a single expelled person from the neighbouring States has yet been proved to be Bangladeshi and they had been stranded unnecessarily in various police stations in districts like Barpeta, Bangaigaon, Dhubri and Chirang.
Former AAMSU president Abdus Samad Ahmed said the students body, during his tenure, sat with the AASU leaders at least five times to find out a concrete solution of the vexed Bangladeshi issue and adopted certain resolutions towards the end, but due to non-cooperation on the part of the AASU, things remained unchanged, he said.
Calling for another all-party effort to end the impasse, Samad said a few leaders are issuing statements to instigate people. He requested the press to visit the troubled areas to assess the situation.
The students body asked the minority ministers and MLAs to quit the Congress and warned of imposing a ban on their entry into the minority-dominated areas. If the Congress-led Government fails to check the harassment of minorities, the AAMSU will launch a Statewide agitation soon, said its leaders.
Apart from preparation of NRC and distribution of citizen identity cards, the AAMSU demanded security for the refugees in the BTAD areas. It also demanded an alternative law to the now-scrapped IM(DT) Act so as to prevent the harassment of minorities.
The AAMSU has decided to send a delegation to New Delhi by August 10 to apprise the Centre of the prevailing situation in Asom.
Axom Xena warns AAMSU, sets deadline
By our Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, July 28: Axom Xena (AX) chief convenor Niranjan Nath has set a seven-day deadline from today for the All Assam Minority Students Union (AAMSU) to tender an abject apology for its comment that All Assam Students Union (AASU) advisor Samujjal Bhattacharyya is an agent of the Congress Government and that counter-attacks will be launched against the Asomiyas in lower Asom districts if the AASU continues to harass minority people in the name of its drive against suspected Bangladeshis.
Talking to The Sentinel today, Nath said if the AAMSU does not tender an apology for its comment against Bhattacharyya and threat to the people of Asom within deadline set today, AAMSU leaders will have to face the wrath of the AASU in all districts of the State. The AAMSU is an agent of Bangladesh, and as such it is vocal as and when it comes to the interest of Bangladeshis in Asom and elsewhere in the region. The minority students union is out to provide a security shield to Bangladeshis staying illegally in Asom, Nath said, and added: The AASU and the AX will continue their oust-Bangladeshi movement till Asom is made free from Bangladeshis, and the students bodies will not spare the political parties and organizations which have been patronizing Bangladeshis in the State.
Nath further said that those who had descended to Asom from Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland recently were Bangladeshis, and there was no doubt about it. Had they been Indians, they would not have left Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, he added.
