Seminar on cyber crime

GUWAHATI, April 17 The Social Action Network (SAN), a North-East based NGO, is organising a seminar in association with the Centre for Mass Communication and Journalism, Cotton College, on the growing menace of cyber crime in the region, at the KBR Hall in Cotton College on April 27 next.
The theme of the seminar would be Trends in Cyber Crime and Need for a Deterrent Mechanism in North East.
Neelotpal Deka of SAN, informed that though both print and electronic media have been reporting a lot about cyber crimes in Guwahati and cases have been registered and filed in police stations and different courts respectively, there are a few important things, which the common people should know.
The seminar is aimed at improving the awareness level of the people regarding cyber crimes in the city, Deka stated.
Deka further informed that unlike what people think, cyber crimes also include phishing attack on financial institutions to outraging modesty of a woman.
In more general terms, cyber crime also embraces crimes like credit card frauds, illegal downloading, industrial espionage, child pornography, kidnapping children via chat rooms and creation or distribution of viruses and spam among others, he elaborated.
Chief Justice Jasti Chelameswar will inaugurate the seminar. Justice (rtd) DN Choudhury, Gautam Baruah, director, IIT, Guwahati and Director General of Police RN Mathur are also likely to take part in the seminar among a host of other senior judicial and administrative officials.
The interested students are asked to register themselves on or before April 26.
