Assam BJP to wrest recognition for Peoli, Jeuram as âfirst martyrsâ

   From our Correspondent Sentinel Assam
JORHAT, April 26: The State unit of Bharatiya Janata Party will push for the
ârightfulâ recognition of Peoli Phukan and Jeuram Dulia Barua as the first
martyrs of the Independence movement in the country. Phukan and Barua, who
set fire to a British armoury and had to go to the gallows after an unfair
trial on September 24, 1830, have not been declared as the first martyrs for
âmysterious reasons,â office-bearers of the State BJP said on the sidelines
of a special function held to pay homage to the 38 martyrs of Asom, who laid
down their lives for the freedom from British rule, at the auditorium of
   Tarajan Sanmilan here.
The daylong function, organized by the Jorhat district committee of BJP, was
part of the yearlong commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Indiaâs First
War of Independence by the saffron party. State BJP president Ramen Deka,
Nagaon MP Rajen Gohain, zonal general secretary for Northeast P
Chandrasekhar Rao, State organizing general secretary Harekrishna Bharali
and two key functionaries, Dr Dayananda Borgohain and Santanu Gogoi,
   attended the function.
A BJP office-bearer said that the State unit of the party would raise the
issue at the valedictory function of the commemoration programme at New
Delhi and Guwahati on May 10.
Todayâs function was presided over by the State BJP president. Freedom
fighter Tileswar Bordoloi and academician Dr Amulya Sarma also addressed the
      gathering.
