GUWAHATI, Aug 10: A group of students of Assam Engineering Institute (AEI), Guwahati, have developed a new low-cost tractor under the guidance of Kanak Gogoi. The 5.5HP tractor-‘Kontilo’, has been specially designed targeting the poor farmers in the State.

Gogoi, who is also an innovator in the automobile sector, has been providing inputs to the students of the mechanical department of AEI to materialize the plan. The tractor will be launched by the end of this month.

The students – Supratim Bora, Shraban Kumar Singha, Nilkamal Kalita, Nitin Kumar Das and Sanjay Bhuyan, have been developing the tractor at a small garage of Gogoi. This is a low-cost tractor, manufactured after considering the poor economic condition of the farmers. Moreover, the engine has been specially designed to provide maximum output in the paddy field.

“Our farmers will be immensely benefited as Kontilo can be used for duel operations including ploughing and transportation of goods,” the students said while providing feedback on the new tractor.

Inspired by Kanak Gogoi’s innovation in the field of automobile sector, the students have come forward to manufacture a low-cost tractor. The fuel-efficient and cost effective tractor will be useful for remote villages. “The estimated market price of Kontilo will be Rs 1 lakh as it is cheaper compared to power tillers available in the market,” they informed. It has single cylinder 4-stroke diesel engine equipped with swirl combustion chamber.

Providing more information on ‘Kontilo’, Gogoi informed that it would be the cheapest tractor at a price of Rs 1 lakh. “The maximum speed of the tractor is 40km per hour and it can work under adverse condition. We have used a new technology to provide maximum output in agricultural operations,” he added.

As it is a low-cost tractor, the students are now eagerly waiting for help from the agriculture department. “We will be happy if the agriculture department offers any assistance in the near future,” Nitin Das said.
