Nationalism is a strong feeling even now in the age of globalisation; it cannot be wished away.
Language is one of its major components
.
Xenophobia can be whipped up by interested quarters putting the fear of loss of identity:  may be the basis of fear is unfounded or would come to naught at one point of time or other in the course of history.
National feeling has been used by rulers or their detractors to great effect in last couple of centuries.
If it were a question of mere assertion of proprietary right over the land or other usufruct on such land where a person lives, the existence of the phenomenon called 'Assam' too is transient in the respect of history of mankind.
Having said that, some people in Assam truly say and believe  that their mother tongue is Assamese, but they can hardly speak/ compose a complete sentence in Assamese. Due to the ground realities that give prominence to proficiency in English/Hindi/Computer language (;-)), the number of Assamese speakers is fast dwindling, irrespective of migration of other people to Assam. That is the reality of market.
Now, nationalism has become a tool of the market place in the sense that you remember your national identity not for your love towards the nation to which you belong. but for the apprehension that you are going to lose whatever political power you weild as a group ( be it that of a subservient nature) and thus your economic benefits (it is leftover breadcrumbs for the 'Assamese') to others.
Yet, no problems can be solved by merely wishing it away or lampooning a 'living thought'.

Assamese --each living in Assam today want:

PURPOSE OF HEALTHY EXISTENCE- at par with world's developed
SOMETHING TO  PRODUCE  to contribute to#1 
Change everything wrong -imposed by outsiders  
Assert your ownership on  everything  above/on/below Assam
Language could be anything -- like the one discovered and printed by American  X'tian Missionaries at Sibsagar 100+ years back.
Or it could be Gibberish/Tagalog/Esperento./ Digital  ASCII

Dear AllI am hereby attaching a large file of the the Language census data upto the Sub Division wide for your knowledge.The date came out recently.The DATA SAYS- The population of Assamese speaking people in seven districts of the Brahmaputra Valley of Assam declined while that of Bengali speakers there increased over a 10-year period from 1991 to 2001 Rpt 1991-2001. Now it is 2008.Please have a close look and realise the gravity. Are we not being hoodwinked the same set of people again and again.It is a large Excel file. Please store it properly and see it youself what is actually happening and how many of us actually speak Assamese langugage.We are fighting within us identifiying us Kalitas, Ahoms, Chutiyas, Boros etc etc. Just see the Cesus report. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/assamonline/files/misc/C-16.XLSIf you cannot download from above(assamonline archive) or the one attached because file is big, collect it from Census office,or in extreme need
