— The assertion of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh that every possible effort would be made to preserve the art and culture as also the physical integrity of Majuli augurs well for the future of the river island. Keeping intact the physical integrity of Majuli, which is among the world’s largest river islands and a nerve-centre of Assamese culture, has emerged as a big challenge in recent years, with flood and erosion wreaking havoc on the island.
