SECRETARY’S REPORT ON 
WORKSHOP ON EXPLORING THE US MARKET  
  
A Workshop on “EXPLORING THE US MARKET FOR LOCAL ENTREPRENEURS” was held on August 18, 2008, at Cotton College Conference Room, Guwahati. The Workshop was jointly organized by Friends of Assam & Seven Sisters (FASS) and Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC), Cotton College . 
  
A good number of entrepreneurs and officials of APEDA (Regional Manager Mr.B.K. Baruah), NEDFi (General Manager Mr.S.K. Baruah), IIE (Dr.Sunil Saikia), FINER (CEO Mr.Sanjay Kalita), NERAMAC attended the Workshop. 
  
A presentation by Sri Vavani Sarmah from Seattle , USA , an entrepreneur himself, was followed by an interactive session. After a brainstorming discussion on probable goods that can be exported from North East, it was finally decided to give thrust on export of Tea and Joha rice. It was also felt that processed Ginger, Vanilla, Pineapple are some of the good candidates for export from this region. Since economic development of the North-East is one of the thrust areas of FASS, hence this Workshop has been organized. As USA is the global economic giant and FASS has its head quarters there, so FASS will try to link the entrepreneurs of the North East with the US market. Sri Vavani Sarmah displayed samples of many products having a good market in USA . Some local Entrepreneurs also displayed their products during the workshop. All present in the Workshop felt that it was an eye opener. 
  
FASS India President, Sri Shantikam Hazarika, conducted the Workshop and he stressed on ‘product branding’. FASS India Secretary General Sri Bidyananda Barkakoty said that more such Workshops will follow once market linkages are established with the US market. FASS India Vice-President Sri Jayanta Barman and member Sri Pratul Kalita were present. 
  
Dr.S.K. Choudhury (Chief Co-ordinator, EDC-Cotton College ), Prof.A.K. Handique ( Gauhati University ), Dr.Indira Bordoloi (Principal, Handique Girls College ), Sri Chinmoy Sharma (Sangita Communication) , Sri Neelotpal Deka (Writer & Lawyer) were also present.
