Three Dead In Italy Floods
A man was killed in Rome when a water-damaged bridge collapsed on him while
he helped a driver with their flooded car.
The River Tiber, which runs from Mount Fumaiolo to the west coast of Italy
near Rome, is reportedly at its highest level in 40 years.
There are warnings it could burst its banks in Rome after rising five metres
in two days.
The head of Rome's emergency services, Guido Bertolaso, said it could burst
its banks in northern sections of the city.
More rain fell on the city on Wednesday night than the average total for the
whole of December, a local weather observatory said.
On Thursday, rescue workers recovered the body of a woman who drowned in her
car after being trapped in an underpass.
In Calabria, a 76-year-old man died of a heart
attack</fc/heart-disease.html>after a tree branch fell onto his car.
Mayor Gianni Alemanno declared a natural disaster in the capital and urged
residents to limit their movements as much as possible.
