Mukul-da,
To start with - I didn't write that article - I cannot vote in the US anyway. It is a good thought - what can one do while sitting far away. I know two NASA engineers - one is from Assam who work at the NASA site where Swadesh - the Hindi movie - was shot -- of a NASA engineer going back to India to start a mass movement.
Neither of the two have gone back - but do some titbit for the cause while remaining here.
Mahatma Gandhi was successful in part becos there was a common enemy clearly visible - oppressive British rule, just like in Martin Luther King's Civil Rights Movement there was a clear enemy - dominant white rule. India does not have a common enemy -within- right now thus it would be difficult to unite the people for a common cause. Thus, new ways - less based on emotion alone - have to be devised. Project based developmental approaches seem to be the in-thing these days - from the World Bank to www.ashanet.org to http://www.joshuaproject.net/
The project based approach seems more workable -- but ofcourse leadership is always an issue. Which leader will lead by example - and energize the followers/subordinates.
Gandhi + Modern Management = 21st Century Mass Movement
ofcourse, nowadays online petitions can be called some example of mass movement (on info highway atleast).
Bailouts are only for the rich !
