Govt donate books worth Rs 8 crore to State libraries

GUWAHATI, Dec 19: The State Government’s Directorate of Libraries today celebrated its golden jubilee and on the occasion Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi distributed books worth Rs 8 crore to the 41 Government libraries in the State. Each library was also given a vacuum cleaner which was provided by the Raja Ram Mohan Roy Foundation. 

In his speech, Gogoi said that the State Government has earmarked Rs 1 crore for setting up of a Central library in the State. To popularize libraries in the State, the Government will lay stress on improving the infrastructure of libraries, Gogoi said. In this connection, the Government has plans to provide internet connection to each of the 41 Government libraries, informed Gogoi. 
 

“In the age of competition, knowledge plays a vital role. And for this, the culture of reading books plays a important role in moulding successful individuals,” said Gogoi. The Chief Minister also assured continued assistance to the libraries in the future. 

Cultural Affairs Minister Bharat Narah said that the State Government will put forward a Rs 13 crore proposal to the 13th Finance Commission for building state-of-the-art libraries in the State. The Government has already earmarked Rs 1 crore for the repair of libraries and the Government will aim to set up a library under each village panchayat, informed Narah. 

For the year 2009, the Government plans to spend Rs 22.4 crore for building 204 libraries, said Narah. He said that the positive response from book readers will also encourage the Government to lay more stress on improving the libraries of the State. In this regard, the Government plans to introduce a feed back system in libraries where readers can write down their opinions and ideas, said Narah. 

The in-charge of the Directorate of Libraries Swapnanil Barua said that children’s corner will be set up in 9 libraries of the State.
