Assamese Muslim Sattras

Dear Sir:

This is in reference to the very enlightening article by Dr Satayakam Phukon on the above subject. I was not at all aware that we had Muslim Sattras in Assam till late 19th century as recorded by Dr Gait. The article has opened a new aspect of the Assamese culture hitherto unknown to many. Sattra (Assamese Xotro) is an old Buddhist tradition in Assamese society which had been in vogue long before the advent of Sri Sankardev who adapted it into the Vaishnavite religion very successfully.

As such it will be informative to know when these Muslim Sattras were started in Assam. It is interesting to note that the locations of the above satras were given mostly in the Jorhat disctrict. The writer is very correct in commenting that “it is quite obvious and clear that complete indigenization of the Islam religion took place in Assam in the ancient times which prevailed up to the beginning of the British era.” This very unique phenomenon in India and Assam should rightly take pride of the fact.

We also agree with the views of the author when he writes, “In 1826, once Assam came under the British Raj many unopened floodgates got opened on the western frontiers, and varieties of pan-Indian influences started to flood Assam. These influences engulfed Assamese Hindus and Muslims alike. The effects of such alien influences started to show up in religious, cultural and linguistic spheres of life.” We may note that this corruption of local Assamese culture (Hindus and Muslims) is still going on.

There is scope of more research and discussion on the subject. It will be very informative if some students of history will do research as to when and how these Muslim Sattras started in Assam and if there are still some vestiges of the same.

Yours Truly
