I think swami Ramdev ji has single handedly popularised yoga in india and many other countries, to the extent that , yoga is now a household word. He has made it accessible to  the common man and has given a ray of hope to many a chronically ill patient.

Even many eminent doctors prescribe his yogic exercises as supplementary to allopathic drugs.

It has now become common to see people in parks, trains, buses and of course homes, doing the famous kapal bhati pranayam . Swamiji seems to have struck a chord in the hearts and minds of people across all the classes : the crorepati seth, the poor govt servant, polticians, vips, prisoners and filmstars et all.

One may not necessarily agree with all Ramdevji says, but for this act of popularising and making yoga accessible and affordable to the average indian ( common  / poor) man, i think he deserves an award from the government.

Although i dnt support his miracel makings or the way he teaches yoga, keeping
the olden track out of line, I only support him for bringing Indian feelings
amongst public of India as well out of the country.Might be he is illeterate, but
clever enough and rich enough!

Bikash-da,

I think it is wrong to label Yoga as Indian, just as it would be wrong to
consider Santa Claus and reindeers is a western product. Yoga is for all though
its principles may have been developed in the region which the British started
calling India.

In the summer break after my 10th class/grade exams I read a newly purchased
book (my father's) while traveling thru 5 cities in 7 days (incl. holy
Vrindavan, terror ridden Punjab - by bus despite terrorists' daylight
attacks on buses). I still kept on reading the book - it was life changing. Here
it is - the man who popularized Yoga in the West. Vivekanand had just introduced
the concept. Yoganand provided the real details including the concept of
Yogi-Christ etc.
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paramahansa_Yogananda

Then during my 12th grade exams I read another book - this time by an American
- the power of positive thinking by Norman Vincent Peale. I needed that
perspective while leaving home for college. That was a kind of Yoga too - though
written by a Christian priest.

Yoga has become a world concept - but just like in India - many just to the
asanas - Pranayama can be dangerous unless done properly, meditation can be
boring/challenging, listening to inner voice can be tricky (as per Peale),
invoking the chakras can be an exercise in futility.

However, you don't need gurus like Ramdev to teach you. God can be
one's guru too!! If you believe in one. Do you?

Umesh
