Rongbong Terang to get Assam Valley award

Eminent literateur of Assam, Rongbong Terang, has been chosen for the
Williamson Magor Education Trust's prestigious Assam Valley Literary
Award, 2008,for his literary excellence, Williamson Magor sources today
said.
A symbol of unity among the hills and plains of Assam,
Terang's proficiency lies in writing novels, besides books on Karbi (an
ethnic community he belongs to) grammar, introduction to Karbi
language, Karbi-Assamese dictionary, collection of Karbi folk tales and
many other literary works.
Terang's best known works are his
novels `Rongmilir hahi (1981), Neela orchid (2001), Krantikalar Ashru
(2005) and Jak herowa pakhi (2005).
Two other books -- a
collection of articles Samanway prabah (1989) and short-story
collection Faringor geet (1990) -- bore testimony to his versatility.
The
newly elected president of the prestigious and influencial Assam
Sahitya Sabha was conferred its Bishnu Rabha Award, 1982,Basudev Jalan
Award and Mahanpurush Madabdev Award (both 2008), besides the Assam
Prakashan Award in 1983 and Padmashree in 1989.
The 71-year-old literateur had retired as the principal-in charge of Diphu Government College, Karbi Anglong district in 2002.
Tea
major Willianson Magor had instituted the Williamson Magor Education
Trust to give impetus to education and cultural progress within the
state, the sources said, adding, the award instituted in 1990 is its
endevour to preserve and promote the rich literary heritage of the
state.
The award will be presented to Terang at a function here in March next.
