              Magazine nominates 10 as persons of the year

 GUWAHATI, Dec 31 – Assamese monthly youth magazine Jeevan today announced names of its ten nominees who have been selected as the State’s persons of the year 2007.

Addressing a press conference here this noon, editor of the two-and-a-half-year old magazine Suresh Ranjan Gaduka said that the nomination was made on the basis of these persons’ role in various fields. These persons gave a special dimension to the Assamese society, he said.

The nominees included Nandini Sarma, a high school student of Kansas, US. Her research on natural food preservatives, cancer, pathology of Herpes Simplex Virus infection brought her several awards and recognition. She is also a winner of a first place grand ward at the 2007 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, Massachussetts Institute of Technology’s Lincoln Laboratory. 

The magazine has also nominated Deepshikha Choudhury, who won the Nuclear Physics Award 2008 of the American Physical Society. Her PhD dissertation developed a new theory to allow measurement of important properties of the neutron, a basic building block of matter.

Umananda Dowerah of Moran who is a curator of cultural heritage has also been nominated by the magazine.

Dowerah has turned his home into a museum and he has over 1,700 gramophone records that include the original voices of Jyotiprasad Agarwalla, Bishnu Prasad Rabha and Phani Sarma, besides the original record of the first Assamese recorded song of 1924, said Gaduka.

Kanak Gogoi, a city-based innonvator, has also been named by the magazine for his devices like the one that helps power generation using speed breakers.

Indira PP Bora has been named by the magazine for her tireless efforts to popularise sattriya dance worldwide. In 2007, she toured the UK and conducted demonstrations, lectures, workshops in leading universities, museums and prime dance locations. The year also marked her golden jubilee year of her life as an artiste .

The magazine named Bhogiram Barman of Beltola area who helped a girl in hours of crisis on November 24 last. 

Bidyut Goswami, a renowned tennis player of the State of yesteryear, has been named by the magazine for his accomplishment as the men’s tennis coach of Columbia University. The University has announced establishment of an endowment in Goswami’s name.

Ranjit Sekhar Mooshahary, the Chief Information Commissioner of the State has also been named by the magazine as one of its ten nominees. Mooshahary has launched a war on corruption at public level, said Gaduka.

Machang Lalung, who with his lifelong sufferings as a prisoner for no fault of his exposed the shortcomings of the judicial system of the country has also been named as a nominee by the magazine for the purpose, Gaduka said.
