Sheila asks police for prompt action on molestation of NE girls
>From Sobhapati Samom Assam Tribune
IMPHAL, Jan 10 – Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit has asked the Delhi police for immediate action to book the culprits behind the molestation of two Manipuri girls in the national capital last week.
Around 25 persons allegedly molested two girls from Manipur. The demand for prompt action was raised by the State PCC chief Gaikhangam Gangmei during his meeting with the Delhi CM on Wednesday. Sources said Gaikhangam urged Dixit to take prompt and stern action to book the culprits.
The Delhi CM also assured the PCC chief of setting up separate ladies hostel for the Northeastern region in the national capital.
Meanwhile, the influential Democratic StudentsÂ’ Alliance of Manipur, DESAM has condemned the incident. The DESAM also claimed that in September last year, youths coming to the capital for a recruitment rally for the police had raped a Manipuri girl. Another case of molestation of three Manipuri girls also occurred later. However, Delhites remained silent spectators even though the crimes occurred in front of them, DESAM stated.
It also strongly denounced the Delhi police for failing to register cases despite complaints made on time. The Delhi police instead of taking action against the culprits issued dress codes to be followed by North East women, the DESAM added.
The Manipur Pradesh Mahila Congress has welcomed the assurance from the Delhi Chief Minister.
