I just saw that Rajiv T. General Manager , Publisher and North India head of Indian Express accepted my friend request on Linked In . Two days back my Bhopal branch Manager Arvind T.had sent a friend invitation. He went to IIM - Calcutta later on (2002 graduate)That was my first job - my only paid job outside Jaipur School in India -which lasted from 1996 to 1999.
The advt for recruits said -- "for those who are ready to battle acid churning excitement in business environments. (or something like that).
This article is about such acid conscious people - since the stock market crashed -- my brother had invested a sum too - despite my advice -since he has no idea about it - just following some commission agent of a mutual fund.
Wonder how people make money on stock market - must be in trouble these days.

============================== New on the Site New Challenges in Leading Professional Services http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/5773.html
Professional service firms are being challenged as never beforeby clients, associates, and the competition, just for starters. But old-style PSF leaders are not equipped to respond, says Harvard Business School professor Thomas J. DeLong. He discusses his new book When Professionals Have to Lead. Plus: Book excerpt.
If Marketing Experts Ran Elections http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/5845.html
Most Americans seem indifferent about the political process, judging by lackluster voter turnout historically, although the primaries so far seem to be bucking the trend. Professor John Quelch discusses what politicians can learn from consumer marketing.
Working paper: Competition in Modular Clusters http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/5842.html
Download the pdf. The last 20 years have witnessed the rise of disaggregated "clusters," "networks," or "ecosystems" of firms in a number of industries, including computers, telecommunications, and pharmaceuticals. In these clusters, different firms design and produce various components while others specialize in the various stages of a complex production process. HBS professor Carliss Y. Baldwin and C. Jason Woodard consider the pricing behavior and profitability of these so-called modular clusters. Among their findings: Clusters operating under open, public standards may have higher prices and profits than those operating under closed, proprietary standards.
Working paper: The Political Economy of "Natural" Disasters http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/5832.html
Download the pdf. With the onset of global warming, it is likely that the incidence of natural shocks will only increase in the years ahead, write Charles Cohen and HBS professor Eric D. Werker. Disaster relief is one of the most basic and important transfers of wealth between developed and developing countries. This paper argues that the relief enters and affects a highly political situation. It also argues that the political economy of natural disasters is understandable and predictable, and may be mitigated.
What Do You Think: Does Judgment Trump Experience? http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/5828.html
Online forum OPEN until January 24. It's a question as relevant for business as for the U.S. presidential campaign, says HBS professor Jim Heskett. If "judgment capability" is a function of experience, what kind of experience is important? Does plenty of experience really improve judgment? What do you think?

Best of Faculty Q&As The Immigrant Technologist: Studying Technology Transfer with China http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/5585.html
Immigrants account for almost half of Ph.D.-level scientists and engineers in the U.S., and are prime drivers of technology development. Increasingly, however, Chinese technologists and entrepreneurs are returning home rather than staying in the U.S. to pursue opportunities. In the Q&A from 2007, professor William Kerr discusses the phenomena of technology transfer and implications for U.S.-based businesses and policymakers. From New Business.
