I was discussing study abroad and grad school admissions with a student of mine on the other side of the globe in New Zealand, and with another seeking Harvard MBA admissions - he requested to see my SOP - Statement of purpose. Here is the entire SOP with the email header.

Some might like it - esp those planning to apply for college admissions this year - 2008. The process of writing the SOP and knowing yourself better is the key thing.

Subject: [Assam] Courage and research- Statement of purpose - Harvard

 Hi,

I switched on my mobile yesterday evening - after a week.
Was caught in the quagmire of admission applications. www.grebible.com says that the Statment of Purpose (SOP) must be unique --andnot a much revised and improved.
It perhaps should contain gems of info which show the very core of your individuality --and thus u must now get busy with the ultimate philosophical question --who am I and why I am doing what I am doing ; and what do I want to do in future. Such thoughts cannot come in a fast food joint among hippy crowds. It says that this process will also help u know yoursel better.
Well it took me nearly a month to get 1500 words onmyself (as required by Harvard) and then I applied to Univ. of California-Berkeley on 12th.
 Research and courage:
Now i leanrt that Harvard expects to know more about the research topic from doctoral candidates so I added some more to my SOP -and deleted some.
A jump from BA+MBA to doctoral degree requiered great amount of courage but I had no choice --MEd guys get no schol --and ofcourse I would love to have Doc. written before my name.
I had absolutely no idea about how to identify research topics for DEd --but my background of economics and MBA has lot of info on surveys, census and statistcial analysis and research - so I decided to just list out what I want to really know -maybe someone would be interested -and there were 3 guys in Harvard who were doing similar work --so lets see.

Check out my SOP -no point on criticising it -since I've already sent it on the 13th .

Don't try to copy it -becos surely your life cannot be as topsy turvy as mine!!
 Is it?

 Umesh
