                Another NIT in NE likely

 NEW DELHI, Jan 29 – The Northeast is likely to have another National Institute of Technology, with the Central Government considering establishment of an institute in Manipur. Addressing the ongoing Social Editor’s Conference, HRD Ministry officials said a Central team after visiting the State has submitted its report last November. The report is under process currently, said the official.

The institute at Manipur would be second after the State Engineering College at Agartala has been upgraded into NIT. Officials further said each of the eight North Eastern States now have Central University. Courses have been started in all such universities except Mizoram. The Mizoram University could start management programme only last July.

The officials further said that academic session in Indian Institute of Management, Shillong would start from the current session. The State Government would provide 120 acres of land or more free of cost for IIM, Shillong. The State Government has made an appropriate temporary accommodation, officials appreciated.

However, fund size earmarked for various educational projects has shrunk this fiscal. During 2006-2007, amount of Rs 159.99 crore was sanctioned, however, in 2007-2008 it was reduced to Rs 51.87 crore.

Officials disclosed that the empowered committee administering the Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resource since its inception, had recommended release of Rs 816.66 crore, out of which Rs 655.84 crore has been released till last November. The funds were earmarked for development of educational infrastructure.
