I wish to see all students organizations and others like AASU, AATSU,
BSU, NESU etc to join hands with this effort -->Anti-bandh. No more
Bandh in Assam and NE Region for next years.
Anti-bandh forum at Dibrugarh
>From Our Bureau
DIBRUGARH, June 26 - A new entity has been formed in the city, this
time against the malaise of bandhs, or general strikes. The new
organisation has named itself the Bandha Birudhi Janasajagata Mancha.
The professed objective of the outfit, led by Tapan Sarma Baruah, is to
oppose any bandh in the city. The outfit on Wednesday organised an
awareness campaign at the Thana Chariali Gandhi Mandap here, where
people from different walks of life participated. A statement issued by
the conveners said they would soon launch a city-wide signature
campaign, to oppose bandhs.

Dear Friends,
I appreciate the view initiated by Mr. Bidyananda followed by
the comments from Niranjan and Vavani.
I guess we all understand that the common ideology that we all
share is that we all look forward for a developed state "ASOM" and more
or less we understand what are the problems responsible for our state
still being in its present state.
As already mentioned by Vavani, it would be a good idea to have
statistics of the bandhs being called in a year. In the same line, I
would request all my friends out there to 'define the problem'. Let us
address the problem from the mindset of common people including the
youngsters. I have a feeling whenever we talk of movements some way down
the lane it gets misleaded. So let us create a platform where we can
have the right man sharing the correct information and then we can have
people suggesting ways of improving the same.
From my side I would like to mention about the 'brain-drain
phase' going on in the state. We have all the intellectuals moving out
of the state, except for a few who still work and contribute in their
own way towards the development of the state. We need to understand the
effects of globalization and use the benefits towards developing our
state.
My intentions are only two raise awareness, so that we all share
the same ideology and understand the problem without any political
influence.
With regards,
Dipta Kumar Saha,

Thanks Bidyananda,
While you are brining this very good points, may be we can start keeping
track of each Bandh statistics like
1. Which Organization called the Bandh
2. For how many hours
3. For what cause
4. Who are their leaders
5. Possible effects if any
Then, end of each year we can publish this data for public consumption
(Haal Khata day or P&L Account day). Please comments.
Hello Nava Thakuria,
Do you have this statistics for last year, if not, can we do something?
Please comments
Thanks

Thanks Niranjan,
100% agree with your views. Few more points to be added.
1. Students of class 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 9, 10 etc cann't be blamed. Many
AASU members understand its effect on common people as well on state
economy, but many leaders using it for their own benefits. That's is the
problem.
2. This is democretic movement. The problem we have is that -- our
existing law cann't make anybody responsible for this kind of so called
democretic movements. So, we have so many thing things to do to improve
on this aspects.
3. I think, we need some kind of sociol movement for cultural
change and few visionary leaders (political and administration) to be
part of our systems who are really can work beyond their own benefits.
My 2 cents

HI all,
Not only Tea Industries but the entire Assam progress is hampered due to
this unnecessary bandh.Even our so called student organization AASU
didn't under stand it and supported it. For any issue they organized one
bandh. Common people are needed to understand that this bandh causes
heavy losses to state government and due which our state is not able to
do progress as compared to other state in India . Don' blames Govt. that
they are not providing any facilities (road, electricity etc) or not
well qualified to do their jobs. Every assumes people inside the state
or outside the state are equally responsible for the current condition
of our state.
I will not write enough or explain anything but what I think as an Oil
and Tea are the most precise assets of our state then at this point of
time our Asom state should be one of the richest and progressive state
of India .
Regards

ASSAM TRIBUNE FRONT PAGE NEWS : June 20, 2008
Bandhs hit State tea industry
By Ajit Patowary
GUWAHATI, June 19 - Bandhs sponsored by various organisations are
affecting tea industry of the State with a cascading effect on the
quality of its products. This is when the tea industry here is on the
path of resurgence after a several-year- long recession.
Vice-chairman of the North Eastern Tea Association (NETA) Bidyananda
Barkakoty said that the frequent bandhs called by different
organisations are affecting the tea industry severely. In the current
month alone, there were three statewide bandhs within the span of a
week, he said.
Barkakoty, also a tea planter himself, has made an appeal to all the
organisations taking recourse to this form of agitation, to exempt tea
industry from its purview, particularly during the main plucking season
between May and October.
The best tea of the season is produced during May and June. The tea
leaves plucked behind schedule even by a day, leads to a lot of mess as
the quality of the finished products and its impact goes on in a cyclic
order for several weeks, Barkakoty said. He recalled the tea industry
adage - Tea is produced in the garden and not in the factory - to drive
home his point.
Since tea market is very quality-conscious, poor quality tea fetches
very low price. The situation today is such that even a marginal loss of
quality will adversely affect Assam tea's image in the international
market, he said.
The overall situation now is favourable for the resurgence of tea
industry in India as well as in Assam . The strife in Kenya , together
with the absence of surplus stock of the previous year, has provided the
Indian tea industry an excellent scope to recoup, he said.
Kenya and Sri Lanka are the main rivals of India in the international
tea market. While Sri Lanka mainly manufactures Orthodox tea, Kenya
mainly manufactures Crush-Tear-Curl tea, which is popularly known as CTC
tea. Each of them produces around 310 million kg of tea annually. As
they do not have big domestic markets, much of their produce is
exported.
India produces around 950 million kg of tea. In it, the share of CTC is
around 860 million kg and that of Orthodox is around 90 million kg.
Assam produced 484 million kg of tea in 2006 and of it, CTC comprised 93
per cent and Orthodox comprised 7 per cent. About 80 per cent of the
Indian tea is consumed in its domestic market. The per capita
consumption of tea in India is about 800 grams.
In 2006, India exported 204 million kg of tea. To it, its CTC had a
contribution of 131 million kg, whereas its Orthodox contributed 73
million kg.
The tea industry in the State has set a target to produce 500 million kg
this season. On the other hand, India has set a target to touch 150
million kg to 200 million kg as for its Orthodox tea is concerned,
during the next five years. In 2006, the country produced 89 million kg
of Orthodox tea.
In the international tea market, the Commonwealth of Independent States
(CIS), which is the conglomeration of the former partners of the USSR ,
buys 21 per cent of the Indian export.. Iraq also buys a similar
quantity, while Iran and the United Arab Emirates together buy 13 per
cent, United Kingdom and Ireland together buy 11 per cent and Pakistan
buys seven per cent of the Indian export, according to the 2006 export
data concerning Indian tea.
The country is now targeting the CIS, Germany , UK and other European
countries to sell its Orthodox tea, said Barkakoty.
