Media workshop concluded at press club
Guwahati: Media is allowed to publish a fair and accurate report of a judicial proceeding. Even the media persons can make a fair comment on the merits of a case. These facts appeared in a conversation among lawyers and journalists during a media workshop.
Attending the workshop at Guwahati Press Club auditorium today (June 28), two lawyers of Gauhati High Court namely Shantanu Bharali and Ujjal Bhuyan commented, Unlike general understanding, a person shall not be guilty of contempt of court for publishing any fair comment on the merits of any case, which has been heard and finally decided.
Nearly 20 reporters attended the programme, organized by Guwahati Press Club, where various media related issues concerning the Contempt of Courts Act 1971 were discussed in details. Addressing the gathering, Bharali also added, Fair criticism of judgment can be made as per the section 5 of the said act and in some cases such types of criticism gets relevance to strengthen the judiciary system of the democracy.
Prior to the programme, both the lawyers were felicitated by the press club members.
